BDH Constructions, experienced commercial builders servicing Port Fairy, undertook the restoration of a rare, heritage-listed railway goods shed — one of the last of its kind still standing. This important community asset required a blend of structural reinforcement and cosmetic restoration to ensure it could safely accommodate future public use while preserving its historical significance.
The works involved the complete replacement of all external cladding, spouting, and downpipes. Rotten timber dados fixed to the cladding were carefully replaced, and the external timber decking was reconstructed using traditional methods. To maintain the shed’s heritage character, every material used needed to closely match the original — a task that required precision sourcing and craftsmanship.
Key project elements included:
- Specially manufactured screws to suit galvanised corrugated cladding
- Custom-milled hardwood timbers sourced from interstate
- Restoration of original rolling timber doors
- Timberwork repainted in authentic heritage colours
- Traditional decking installation using original-style spikes
The team also removed unsympathetic modern additions, returning the shed to its original form. Every detail was addressed with respect for the building’s legacy, ensuring the final result honoured its past while making it fit for future use.
